Building community with Benedict College and SC Codes

On Wednesday, Sept. 7, our volunteer and community coordinator for our SC Codes program Morgan Boykin joined Dr. Hong Jiang, Computer Science department chair at Benedict College and Student Success Manager Kayin Jones for a new monthly support series for CS students at the school.

Throughout the fall semester, we will be promoting SC Codes as an additional resource for CS students for learning and mentorship opportunities. Through the partnership, we are connecting with Freshman-Senior CS students at Benedict as well area HBCU's (SC State, Allen, Claflin) with the hopes of supporting their studies and increasing diversity in our mentorship pool/ SC tech community.

“Many students showed interest in taking our courses while they are in school for additional learning, lots of mentor requests to talk to a professional coder and we hit on the importance of “paying it back” as a volunteer once they are professionals. So good!” - Morgan Boykin

At Build Carolina, our mission is to advance South Carolina’s tech community through demand-driven training, connection and support. Building relationships with the CS students at Benedict College is just one way we are working to encourage additional connection to our tech community in South Carolina, and to give these students additional ways to both learn and give back.

If you’re interested in connecting with us, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
